Our Services are available free of charge to anyone age 50 or older who resides in our local community; there are no income-level requirements.  Financial contributions are appreciated but not required.

medical transportation driver and client

Medical Transportation

Drivers take older adults to medical and therapy appointments.  Call at least three days before your medical or therapy appointment and we will try to find a driver for you.  Provide your name, address, and phone number; and the date, time and location of your appointment.

companion transportation volunteer and client at grocery store

Companion Transportation

Volunteers take older adults grocery and pharmacy shopping, to the bank, hairdresser, library, or other local destinations.  Call our office and let us know where and when you would like to do your errands.  Provide your name, address, and phone number and we will match you up with a volunteer.  The more flexible you can be in the time and locations, the easier it will be for us to satisfy your request.  If you need a ride to any of the Shepherd's Center activities call our office and we will try to find a ride for you.

friendly caller volunteer

Friendly Callers and Visitors

Volunteers make regular contact by phone with individuals, homebound or not, who enjoy friendly conversation.  They also visit those who desire a bit more companionship and contact with their community.  If you would enjoy a phone call or visit let us know and we will match you up with a friendly volunteer.

handy helper volunteer

Handy Helpers

Volunteers perform minor home repairs or help you plan your downsizing/decluttering goals to help keep your home safe and livable.  If you need help with small maintenance projects (minor carpentry work, simple plumbing and electrical repairs, and small painting jobs), call our office and a handy helper volunteer will contact you to discuss your needs.  There is no labor charge but you must pay for all required materials.  We also can help you plan your process of downsizing/decluttering your belongings, sorting and separating items that stay or move with you, items to sell, donate or discard.  You can get results with less stress!

Parish Nurse taking blood pressure

Health and Wellness

A health care volunteer provides personal health counseling and education, blood pressure screening, and refers clients to appropriate community resources.  She also facilitates wellness of mind, body and spirit by coordinating a Wellness class for each Adventures in Learning (AIL) session.  She is available for health counseling and resource referral each Thursday during AIL sessions from noon-1pm in the Health and Wellness Center.  Blood pressures are routinely taken on Thursdays at AIL and prior to Lunch n' Life programs.  If you need advice or information on available community health resources call our office and we will have our volunteer contact you.  We do not perform "hands on" procedures except for blood pressure screening and do not provide in-home care.

financial documents

Record Keeping Assistance

Volunteers provide instruction and assistance in setting up a filing system and understanding banking, health insurance, and tax documents.  They also supply referrals when the services of a professional are needed.  Contact our office if you need help and one of our volunteers will call you to determine the type of assistance you require.  We can help you set up a simple filing system for financial documents, balance your checkbook, reconcile bank statements, and pay monthly bills.  We also can help you make sense of health and tax documents, and provide advice on wills and powers of attorney.

Senior Navigator

In September 2007 the Shepherd’s Center became an official site for the “SeniorNavigator”, a free online public resource that provides information about health and aging resources available to Virginians.   For additional information call our office.
